The assignment was to design a housing project for 15-25 households, focusing primarily on social and ecological aspects, while also considering economic factors. The design was to promote social harmony and environmentally friendly solutions that are also cost-effective. A vacant plot in the Västerbro area of Lund served as the site for this new housing development.
In this project, we aimed to explore what a home can be - and how it can be something more than what happens within its walls. Can a home be connected to the shared spaces of the neighborhood without losing its sense of privacy? A key starting point was the idea of community: we investigated how different design strategies and a sense of safety can encourage social interaction between people.
What my project partner Andreas and I found most important was the question of how residents can feel a sense of ownership and engagement in their neighborhood and living situation. Can part of the home be flexible - open to being shaped and used according to the residents' own preferences? The result was a residential area where people can gradually move between the social and the private, based on their individual needs and desires. This project gave me valuable tools for developing housing and multi-family dwellings, and provided insights into the complexity of residential architecture—its challenges as well as its possibilities.
